Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate how much a trip will cost in fuel.
How is trip fuel cost calculated?
Fuel cost comes down to three numbers: how far you’re driving, how efficiently your vehicle uses fuel, and the price per gallon where you’ll be filling up. Distance divided by fuel efficiency gives gallons needed; multiplying that by price per gallon gives the total cost.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my car's fuel efficiency?
Your vehicle's window sticker or manual lists an EPA-estimated combined mpg, but real-world mileage varies with driving style, terrain, and load. For a more accurate estimate, track actual mpg over a full tank (miles driven ÷ gallons to refill) rather than relying only on the sticker number.
Why does my actual fuel cost differ from the estimate?
Highway driving typically gets better mpg than city driving with frequent stops; hills, cargo weight, and high speeds (above roughly 60mph / 97km/h) all reduce efficiency; and gas prices vary along a route, so the price you enter is only a snapshot, not what you'll pay at every stop.
Does this account for round trips?
No — enter the one-way distance for a one-way cost, or double the distance (or enter the full round-trip mileage) if you want the total for there and back. The calculator doesn't assume either direction on its own.
How can I reduce fuel cost on a long trip?
Steady highway speeds around 55-65mph (89-105km/h) are typically the efficiency sweet spot for most vehicles — both slower stop-and-go driving and speeds above that increase fuel use. Keeping tires properly inflated and removing unnecessary roof cargo also measurably improve real-world mpg.
