Tip Calculator
Work out the tip and split the total between everyone at the table.
How much should you tip?
Tipping norms vary by service type, region and country, but the calculation itself is simple: tip amount is bill times tip percentage, and per-person cost is the total (bill plus tip) divided evenly among the group.
Frequently asked questions
What is a standard tip percentage?
In the U.S., 15-20% is typical for sit-down restaurant service, with 18-20% increasingly common for good service. Delivery drivers are often tipped a flat amount or 10-15% with a minimum, and some services (like counter service or takeout) have no strong tipping norm at all.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping etiquette generally favors calculating on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax isn't part of the service being tipped. In practice many people tip on the post-tax total shown on the receipt for simplicity — the difference is usually small.
How do I split a bill unevenly, not per person equally?
This calculator assumes an even split. For an uneven split (e.g. someone ordered much more), calculate each person's share of the pre-tip bill first, then apply the same tip percentage to each share individually rather than dividing a shared total.
Do tipping norms differ by country?
Significantly. Tipping is customary and often expected in the U.S. and Canada, more modest (rounding up or 5-10%) in much of Europe, and can be considered unusual or even mildly rude in parts of Asia. When traveling, it's worth checking local norms rather than assuming U.S.-style tipping applies.
